Earthy Stone

Jasper, whose name is derived from the Greek phrase for spotted stone, belongs to the quartz family. Due to the fact that its makeup can comprise up to 20% foreign materials, jasper beads have a densely multicolored, striped, and spotted appearance. Ancient Use

The current Tibetan birthstone for the month of October and a traditional birthstone for the month of March, jasper has a long history of artistic and symbolic use across a wide variety of cultures. Jasper was used to make bow drills—used in ancient fire starting devices—in what is now Pakistan around 6500 years ago.

A popular gem of the ancient world, it was used by the Greeks to carve signet rings and seals. Ancient Egyptians used jasper in their burial rituals, carving amulets from jasper filled with inscriptions and images from the Book of the Dead. Native Americans prized the stone as a rain giver, and some speculate that the apostle Peter derived his name from the stone, a symbol for the rock upon which Christ would build his church.
