An “Adventurous” Product of the Renaissance
Our goldstone beads share goldstone’s long and interesting history, which can be traced back through the centuries to Renaissance Italy. Legend has it that Venetian monks who studied alchemy, discovering methods to transmute common substances into gold, introduced molten copper into a molten glass container. The resulting material, while not true gold, was flecked with golden elements that were appreciated on their own merits.
A common name for goldstone is aventurine glass, which derives from the Italian avventura or adventure. So it seems that a sense of adventure has been closely linked with goldstone and those who wear it from its earliest days. Other names associated with goldstone include monkstone or “monk’s gold,” which also harkens back to a time long ago when good fortune led to goldstone’s discovery.
By Any Name, Goldstone Beads Bring Wonder
It’s a wonderful occurrence when “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” We see examples of this all the time, such as when eggs, milk, and flour (and maybe a little vanilla and butter) combine into a marvelous cake. The ingredients are fine and dandy on their own, but when they join together, the resulting blend is deliciously above and beyond its parts.
Goldstone beads are another example of this law. Goldstone by definition is a type of glass that is infused with miniscule bits of copper. Now there’s nothing wrong with glass or copper—they are both prized for their beauty on their own terms—but neither is likely to be hailed as “gold.”
That’s the case though with goldstone, including our brown goldstone beads, which are so enchanting that they are called “gold” and “stone” when they are actually similar but not the same! Not only that, goldstone is thought of so highly that it can sometimes be included in the gemstone category. We’re confident that you’ll enjoy the quality and beauty of these enchanting beads as well.
