Made for Beginnings
Garnet is the birthstone of the first month, January. It is also the celebration stone for the second anniversary of marriage. A stone for beginnings appropriately finds its etymology in the Latin for “seed like.” Its initial comparison to a seed was for its similarity to a pomegranate before quickly becoming associated with the newness and emergence.
Won’t Be Blue
Garnet beads and gemstones convey a rich, deep, red luminescence, yet the term refers more to a family of stones than to one specific mineral. For this reason, garnet beads are available in a wide range of colors displaying reds, browns, oranges, and even greens. The only color you won’t find a garnet bead in is blue.
Storied Past
The garnet gemstone has been utilized for its beauty and hardness since at least the Bronze Age. The ancient Romans utilized the garnet stone as a decorative jewel to add to pottery, ritualistic statues, sword hilts and daggers, and even in the creation of enamels and glazes. The King of Saxony purportedly possessed a garnet stone of over 465 carats. Considered a bohemian stone, not only for its boho sensibility and color but also for its roots in Bohemian culture. Many churches and castles built in Bohemia feature majestic and lofty interiors accented by garnet.
In some traditions it is even said that Noah used a garnet lantern to navigate flood waters during the night. Garnet is later mentioned in ancient Hebrew tradition as one of the 12 gems in the breastplate of Aaron. In Christian histories, the blood of Christ is represented by the blood red of the garnet stone.
